Source: Have been a wordament addict for ~7 years and have introduced many newbies to the game. Let's not forget all those people that are convinced that the winning players are all cheaters too because they just can't fathom finding that many words that quickly. After playing a few games and seeing the top 10 spots have scores that are 2-3 times higher than yours, I can see how easy it would be to get frustrated and quit. I think a large part of that drop off is because there are a number of "good" players that keep newcomers out of the top 10% bracket. I remember when games had 1000+ players, now it's rare to see more than 400. If you've noticed, the number of players in a game has dropped significantly over the last couple of years. I personally think it's a good way to engage new players and help them build their skills. I'm not one of those users, but whatever, they can play like that if they like. There was a lot of demand from users that found the game too challenging to have a single player mode. You can still play traditional Wordament. Wow, that's pretty aggressive when nothing has been taken away from the game.
